Last night on NPR, Amrit and Anand joined John Schaefer on his great WNYC programme Soundcheck. They discussed the film and straight up ate dosa ON THE AIR. It’s a good chat! You can hear it at the Soundcheck page, or you can stream it below, OR you can have this MP3 forever. As you like.
Here it is, the official DOSA HUNT movie poster! YESSS. Its backstory and creator (NYC tattoo artist Anil Gupta) are profiled in FADER, and Interview Mag, and over at the Asian American Writers Workshop. The poster will be available everywhere the film is showing — and we’ll have news on that front SOON Y’ALL. To be safe you can join the mailing list to keep up with future screenings news, provided we survive Hurricane Sandy. Stay dry, drink chai.
This is a long, digressive, and inordinately illuminating interview by Ashok of Amrit, wherein they find a connective thread on everything from blogging and lawyering to Britney Spears and the Wisconsin gurdwara tragedy, and of course, DOSA HUNT. It’s a good one, it is at the Asian American Writers Workshop.
Billboard’s piece on the film premiere @ Nitehawk Cinema hits on the important stuff: Who came. What was said. What Amrit’s Dad was wearing.
BlackBook Magazine just filed the first proper DOSA HUNT review … and IT’S REALLY NICE. Some verbiage:
Singh contends, justifiably so, that “the film wasn’t just a vanity project,” but there’s certainly the mark of a fanboy filmmaker not yet jaded by the Merchants of Cool-hood of pop music.
The rest of the verbiage is also very nice to consume. Read it at Blackbook.
NEW YORK Magazine took the cast’s Indian contingent out to lunch at Pongal (and called the film “sharply funny”). Catch the piece in NYMag’s new print issue, or online.
If you are curious about the background and making of the film, this conversation between John Norris and Amrit Singh is the one to read.
In a new short film, Stereogum editor Amrit Singh invites six musicians on a hunt to find dinner. It debuts at Nitehawk Cinemas in Brooklyn this week; buy tickets for the premiere run here and click through to read our story.
A lovely piece on the official poster and its artist, Anil Gupta.
Announcing the opening run of DOSA HUNT @ Nitehawk Cinema in Williasmburg on Friday 10/5, Saturday 10/6, and Monday 10/8!
Each ticket comes with dosa and samosa (provided by the delicious Anjappar). After each screening there will be a Q&A panel moderated by music television great John Norris. The afterparties will have complimentary Kingfisher beer, with DJ sets by DFA Artist REWARDS (Friday), Jagjaguwar artist Small Black (Saturday), and Quinn Walker of Frenchkiss Records outfit Suckers (Saturday). Tickets are $15 — for dinner, screening, beer, and friendship. THAT’S PRETTY GOOD.
Friday and Saturday doors are at 11PM (with dosa at 12AM, screening at 12:30AM), while Monday is a Columbus Day matinee at 1PM, which will be a special time. Dosa and drinking is a great way to observe that holiday given how much that dude loved Indians.
That above is an event-specific variation on the official film poster, by NYC tattoo artist/godbody Anil Gupta. He is the best.
We’re really proud of the movie and can’t wait to share it with you. These will be beautiful celebrations. We’d love to have you.
